Background and Methodology of the Deoband Seminary

This humble servant offers the greeting of Islam before this esteemed audience. Allah – Exalted is He – preserve you. We have sensed from you signs of nobility and interest in our condition. We feel an Islamic uprising turning towards us and you, and indeed we are needier of you than you are of us. These are my teachers, my elders and my treasures before Allah in my day and my morrow. They asked me to extend gratitude to you for your generosity and for...

A Query about Mujaddids and their Signs

The beginning is referred to as ra's therefore a mujaddid would be at the beginning of a century although the beginning of a century is also the end of the century that preceded it because it is possible someone may refer to it as the end . Anyway, in whichever century he comes he will be there at the beginning of that century so that the effect of his tajdid remains until the end. The signs of a mujaddid...

Shaykh al-Islam Mawlana Husayn Ahmad Madani (may Allah enlighten his resting place) has also stressed in his letters that the original purpose of Suluk is ihsan. In one epistle he writes, "My respected one. The original purpose of Suluk is ihsan -- 'that you worship Allah as if you are seeing him' (Al-Hadith). In other words an ingrained ability should develop in the salik and this should be at the beginning. As to the end, then that...

The Reality of Tasawwuf (Part One)

It has been mentioned above that Sayyiduna Jibril (may Allah grant him peace) asked the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), "What is ihsan?" The Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) replied, "Ihsan is that you worship Allah as if you are seeing him..." Tariqah in reality is another name for ihsan, or the way to acquire the quality of ihsan. It is this that is called Tasawwuf and Suluk, or name it what you wish -- these...

Tasawwur al-Shaykh

It is also called the exercise (shughal) of Rabitah, Barzakh and Wasta (see Ta'lim al-Din); to the mashayikh of Tasawwuf it is a very important exercise. The mashayikh have written many benefits of this. Some seniors said it is unconditionally (mutlaqan) impermissible. According to this slave, this is incorrect, as Tasawwur al-Shaykh is understood from many hadiths. Because of this, I have not understood why some have deemed it unconditionally impermissible.

A translation of a portion of a letter from Shaykh al-'Ulama' Haji Imdad Allah Muhajir Makki to Shah Rafi' al-Din Deobandi 'Uthmani in which he emphasises his love for Shaykh al-Sunnah Mawlana Rashid Ahmad Gangohi (may Allah shower them with His mercy) and highlights his dim view of those who bear enmity towards him.
